Illinois State Senator Chris Balkema (R-Pontiac) has reported strong opposition among constituents to a proposed Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) tax pilot program in Illinois. According to Balkema, 89% of respondents voiced disapproval of the idea.

“Illinois families are already paying too much at the pump and facing higher costs for everyday needs. A VMT tax would add yet another layer of government tracking and potential taxation — one that could especially hurt rural residents who have to drive longer distances for work, school, and basic services,” Balkema stated.

He affirmed his commitment to opposing new taxes, saying, “I will continue to oppose new taxes and stand up for policies that keep transportation affordable, protect privacy, and ensure fairness for drivers across our state. Your feedback helps me fight for the priorities that matter most to our communities.”

Balkema also addressed rising energy costs affecting Illinois families. He attributed these increases in part to policies that removed reliable energy sources without practical replacements. In response, he is co-sponsoring several bills: SB 1234 would review state energy policy impacts; SB 1235 aims to lift restrictions on fossil fuel plants and allow new peaker plants; SB 1236 seeks to reduce regulatory barriers for projects such as the Lincoln Land Energy Center.

“Many families are feeling the strain of soaring energy bills, made worse by rising costs for food, gas, and housing. These increases stem from policies that forced reliable energy sources offline without practical replacements, leaving our grid vulnerable and consumers paying the price. I’m co-sponsoring legislation to stabilize the grid and prevent future spikes,” said Balkema.

He pointed out that Ameren Illinois had projected summer utility bills would rise between 18%–22%, with extreme heat during June and July driving usage even higher. He noted available assistance through Ameren’s Supplemental Arrearage Reduction Program offering up to $1,000 per year for LIHEAP-eligible customers.

Balkema encouraged residents seeking more information on managing energy costs or accessing support programs to visit his website.

In addition, Balkema highlighted a disparity in wage growth between state government employees and private sector workers from 2021-2024. He noted government pay increased 57% faster than private sector salaries during this period.

The senator also promoted “Level Up Grundy County,” an initiative inviting local residents to help shape Grundy County’s comprehensive plan by participating in surveys or attending community events.

Balkema was elected as a Republican representative of Illinois’ 53rd Senate District in 2025, succeeding Thomas M. Bennett.
