Next Saturday, June 28, a free fishing derby for local children will be hosted by Senator Chris Balkema. The event is open to all kids aged 12 and under.

The derby will take place at the Heidecke Lake fishing bank area, located at 6350 E. Collins Road in Morris, from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by a water safety presentation conducted by the Illinois Conservation Police at 9:10 a.m. Fishing activities are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., with prizes available for the biggest fish, the most fish caught, and a sportsman award.

“This is a great opportunity to introduce kids to the joy of fishing and learn a thing or two about safety on the water,” stated an organizer of the event. The first 50 children to arrive will receive a free rod/reel combo. The event is supported by Grundy County Land Use, the Illinois Conservation Police, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Organizers hope for strong community participation in this educational and recreational activity.
