The Illinois State baseball team lost to Evansville, 4-0, in the second game of their three-game series on Mar. 28 at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium. The defeat leaves Illinois State with a record of 3-2 in conference play and 17-10 overall for the season.
This result is significant as it impacts the Redbirds’ position within their conference and could influence postseason opportunities. The team’s ability to compete effectively in such matchups is important for maintaining competitiveness and supporting recruitment efforts, according to the official website.
During Saturday’s contest, Illinois State had an early opportunity when Brayden Bakes and Graham Mastros reached base in the first inning, followed by Ryan Bakes being hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. However, Evansville managed to get out of the inning without allowing any runs. Starting pitcher Michael Addari retired six consecutive batters after giving up a leadoff runner but ultimately allowed an unearned run following an error in the sixth inning that put Evansville ahead.
Evansville extended its lead with another run on a hit-by-pitch and then added two more on a single in the seventh inning. Despite attempts by Kannon Coakley and Louis Bussard to spark a rally in the ninth inning, Illinois State was unable to score.
Addari recorded his longest outing with six innings pitched, allowing just one unearned run on three hits while striking out five batters—his third straight start with five or more strikeouts. In his last three starts he has limited opponents to only three unearned runs combined. Bakes collected his seventeenth multi-hit game of the season—the most on the team.
