The Illinois State softball team lost its home opener to Iowa, 6-3, on March 10 at Marian Kneer Stadium. The Redbirds attempted a comeback after falling behind early but were unable to overcome Iowa’s strong start.
This game was significant as it marked the Redbirds’ return home and an opportunity to build momentum for the rest of their season. The loss brings Illinois State’s record to 12-8.
Iowa took control in the first inning with a solo home run followed by a three-run homer, quickly establishing a 4-0 lead. In the second inning, another two-run home run extended Iowa’s advantage to 6-0. Illinois State responded in the third when Julia Larson drove in Marissa Moffett with a sacrifice fly. Additional runs came from an RBI single by Ava Boyer in the fourth and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drawn by Hannah Meeks in the fifth. Despite these efforts, Illinois State managed only four hits during the game.
Larson finished with two hits, one walk, one RBI, and one run scored. Boyer contributed an RBI single while Meeks added another RBI after being hit by a pitch twice. On the mound, Hannah Meshnick took the loss after allowing six earned runs over just over an inning of work. Relievers Hannah Meeks, Gracelyn Kemp, and Paige McLeod combined for five scoreless innings.
