The Illinois State women’s golf team began its second tournament of 2026 at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational in Arizona. Alex Sparrow led the Redbirds with a four-over par 76, tying her for 36th place after the first round. The event continues over three days, with Illinois State returning to competition on the second day.
In the opening round, Xavier and Wichita State shared the top position on the leaderboard with scores of 292. Host school Western Michigan followed closely at 296. Other teams including Ball State, Kennesaw State, Bradley, Ohio, Bowling Green, Creighton, South Dakota, Missouri State, Oakland, Central Michigan, Loyola-Chicago, Utah Tech, and Akron posted scores ranging from 298 to 312. Illinois State and Butler are tied at 315.
Sparrow recorded two birdies and 11 pars during her round. Reagan Kennedy finished one stroke behind with a five-over par 77 and is tied for 52nd place; she made a birdie and matched Sparrow’s total of pars.
Elise Fennell (79) and Dani Grace Schrock (82) were third and fourth among Redbird scorers on day one. Fennell had two birdies while Schrock made one birdie during their rounds. Reagan Braker rounded out ISU’s lineup with an 86.
