Illinois Wesleyan University head men’s tennis coach Sam Totten announced on May 5 the recipients of the team’s annual awards at a banquet held Tuesday, April 28. Senior Ben Vigneri was named the team’s most valuable player.
The announcement recognizes achievements from the past season and highlights contributions from student-athletes across all class years. The Illinois Wesleyan Titans Men’s Tennis program features players ranging from freshmen to seniors and competes in NCAA Division III as a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, according to the official website.
Vigneri earned Second Team All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin honors and received two CCIW Player of the Week awards during his final campaign. He finished with an 11-7 record at No. 1 singles and a 9-9 record in doubles alongside seniors Ian Turnbull and Griffin Hammond. Freshman Will Ehrlich was named newcomer of the year after recording a 10-12 singles mark across three, four, and five singles positions, along with an 11-11 doubles record. Hammond received most improved honors for his performance at three and four singles (9-11) as well as in doubles (12-14). Hammond also reached the consolation finals in doubles with Turnbull at the ITA Regional event held September 26–28.
Junior Chase Tomecki was awarded for respect within the team. The Titans graduated five student-athletes this year while four are expected to return next fall.
Coach Totten distributed letters to all nine student-athletes: first-years Jesus Avalos, Will Ehrlich, Truman Raher; third-year Thad Dillow, Chase Tomecki; fourth-year Griffin Hammond, Sebastian Rasquin, Ian Turnbull, Ben Vigneri.
The program holds its home matches at Evergreen Racquet Club and Beadles-Morse Courts in Bloomington according to the official website. As part of its ongoing participation in intercollegiate athletics at this level, Illinois Wesleyan’s men’s tennis continues its tradition within college sports.
