Illinois Wesleyan University’s softball team achieved a narrow victory in a twin set against Millikin University as part of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) matchups. The games occurred at the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur on April 15. The Titans, now holding a 19-7 record this season at 4-0 in the CCIW, won both games by a slim margin against the Big Blue, who are 16-12 overall and 4-4 in CCIW play.

In the first game, Illinois Wesleyan secured a 5-4 victory. The initial advantage was obtained early with key contributions from several players. Hailey Milgazo initiated the scoring sequence, and subsequent plays by Jen Kuhn and Bella Pinter increased their lead. After a struggle in the fourth inning, with the Big Blue pulling ahead 4-2, the Titans regained control. Mallory Holland’s entrance to the mound was pivotal, limiting the damage.

Riley McDoniel and Anna Beckman tied the game for Illinois Wesleyan. The final stages saw important plays, including a double by Casey Wissmiller that brought back the lead to 5-4. Holland concluded the game impressively, ensuring no hits allowed in the final two innings and moving to 3-1 for the season.

The teams were even in hits, each collecting seven, while Beckman and Pinter drove in significant runs. Wissmiller’s performance was also notable, contributing to the Titan’s efforts.

Game two saw Millikin initially take a 2-0 lead, only for Illinois Wesleyan to reduce the deficit thanks to an error. Jen Kuhn hit a home run, tightening the score to 3-2. With skillful batting from Beckman contributing two more runs, the Titans took a 5-3 lead.

The Big Blue evened the score 5-5 in the fifth inning; nevertheless, Illinois Wesleyan responded immediately. Three walks and a hit established a 7-5 lead into the sixth inning. Millikin managed to score another run, but Gianna Certa’s timely pitching finalized the win.

Kuhn’s performance was crucial, while Beckman was again in the spotlight with two RBIs. Pitching duties featured Holland, Maddie Pool, Ella Hermes, and Certa, with the latter securing a third save for the season.

Illinois Wesleyan prepares to host Wheaton College for a CCIW matchup on April 18 in games dedicated to Mental Health Awareness.
