Illinois State Representative Jason Bunting announced on May 1 a legislative update covering recent developments in Springfield, including the passage of a bill supporting new megaprojects such as a potential suburban stadium for the Chicago Bears, ongoing tax proposals, and concerns about jury selection processes.
Bunting said he voted against the “megaprojects” bill in the House, citing concerns that it would give large corporations significant tax advantages while not offering similar relief to homeowners, farmers, or small businesses. He stated: “Everyone in Illinois needs property tax relief, but I have serious concerns about whether this bill provides that relief. What it does do, however, is offer a special deal for a big, politically-connected entity, but no such deal for farmers and homeowners. In other words, it is a targeted carve-out for a certain group, when what we need is broad-based tax relief.” The measure now awaits consideration by the Senate.
Bunting also reported that an amendment proposing higher taxes failed to advance in the House. He argued that Illinois already has one of the highest tax burdens nationally and attributed fiscal problems to overspending rather than insufficient taxation. According to Bunting: “But Illinois’ fiscal problems were not caused by a lack of taxation – they were caused by overspending. Each year, the state sets a new record for spending.” Proposed constitutional amendments must pass both houses by May 3; since this proposal did not advance before then, it will not move forward this year.
Another issue raised was jury panel integrity after it was discovered that one county’s prospective juror list included sixty deceased individuals—some who had died years earlier—and skewed significantly older than the population median age. The defense attorney’s filing “suggests the existence of a potentially more massive, statewide, systemic problem.” Bunting highlighted long-standing warnings from House Republicans regarding voter registration data maintenance.
Bunting noted his office will be relocating from its Dwight location and encouraged constituents needing assistance to contact his team or use their Watseka address during the transition period.
Bunting was elected as Republican representative for Illinois’ 106th District in 2023 after replacing Thomas Bennett according to available information.
