State Representative Dennis Tipsword Jr. has provided updates to constituents in Illinois’ 105th District through his latest newsletter, covering topics from community programs to state policy issues.
Earlier this week, Tipsword’s office partnered with Senator Balkema to deliver Valentine’s cards to seniors in the district. “We are proud to celebrate these special moments with our seniors and thank them for everything they have done for their families and communities. We had tremendous support for this year’s program and thank you to everyone who participated!” Tipsword stated.
Addressing food insecurity, Tipsword highlighted local resources such as Feeding Illinois and the Eastern Illinois Foodbank that assist those in need. He encouraged residents to learn more about these organizations and consider donating or accessing help.
Tipsword also promoted the Illinois Farm to Food Bank Capacity-Building Grant, which offers up to $100,000 for farmers who grow, raise, or process food in Illinois. The grant aims to help store, process, or transport local products to families in need. Applications are due by March 8.
In addition, the Livingston County Childcare Coalition is seeking individuals interested in becoming childcare providers or learning more about the field. Tipsword described it as an opportunity for people to work from home and support community needs.
On affordability issues, Tipsword criticized recent policies passed by Democrats in Springfield. “Democrats say they want to lower the cost of living, yet they continue to push policies that make life more expensive for Illinois families,” he said. He referenced last year’s budget passage, an $8 billion energy rate hike, and potential toll increases as examples of measures increasing costs for residents. He also mentioned new proposals such as charging fees for campfires (HB 4459) and reinstating a bag tax (HB 5112). “Illinoisans are taxed out. It’s time for Dems to stop these ridiculous cash grabs and learn to live within their means,” he added.
Tipsword noted that both legislative chambers will return next week when the Governor delivers the Budget and State of the State Address on Wednesday at noon.
Property taxes were another focus of his update. “Illinoisans pay the highest effective property tax rates in the nation, and yet the system continues to fail them,” he wrote. He called for bipartisan efforts toward real relief: “Over the years, we’ve seen task force after task force on property taxes, but no action from the majority party. We need to come together to find real relief for Illinois families or we will continue to see people leave the state.” A recent opinion piece highlights ongoing concerns about the state’s property tax system.
On ethics reforms following Michael Madigan’s conviction last year, Tipsword said: “The Michael Madigan playbook is still largely in place in the Statehouse. One year after Madigan’s conviction, House Republicans have introduced numerous anti-corruption measures, but Democrats continue to drag their feet on ethics reform.” He continued: “Illinoisans deserve better accountability and transparency from their state government. It’s time to reject the ‘Madigan way’ and start earning back the trust of the people.”
Tipsword concluded his message by wishing everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day.
Tipsword was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 105th House District in 2023 after replacing Dan Brady.
