Illinois State Representative Dennis Tipsword Jr. announced on April 24 several updates from the district, including his participation in the 130th Illinois State Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Conference in Bloomington.
Tipsword said he was honored to speak at the event, which focused on historic preservation, education, and patriotism. He emphasized the significance of America’s 250th birthday celebrations this year: “As we celebrate American’s 250th birthday this year, we are not just honoring a date. We are recognizing a living story – one shaped by courage, sacrifice, innovation, and an unyielding belief in freedom.” He encouraged residents to support their local DAR chapters and participate in America 250 events.
The newsletter also addressed recent severe storms that affected McLean County. According to Tipsword, State Farm reported over 50 auto claims and 260 fire claims from storms on April 17. The company set up a catastrophe customer care site at its Bloomington headquarters from April 20 through April 25 to assist those impacted.
Tipsword recognized Master Gardener Terry Lueders during National Volunteer Week for contributions to District 105 communities. He also welcomed Woodford County Emergency Management Agency Director Kent McCanless to the State Capitol during IEMA Lobby Day.
On infrastructure matters, Tipsword reported that construction has begun on U.S. Route 24 (Boyd Parkway) between Grosenbach Road and Cummings Lane in Washington. The Illinois Department of Transportation project includes pavement patching and resurfacing as well as upgrades to guardrails and traffic signals; lane closures will continue through October.
Legislative developments were also highlighted by Tipsword. He said the Illinois House advanced a controversial megaprojects bill but noted ongoing concerns about property tax revenue replacement related to such agreements: “It is within reason to create a competitive option for the Chicago Bears to stay in Illinois, but this bill is not a finished product and needs more work and refinements.” Regarding redistricting changes passed by House Democrats, he stated: “Democrats are once again putting politics before people in their relentless pursuit of absolute power.” On tax policy proposals involving an additional income tax for individuals earning over $1 million annually—which did not advance—he commented: “While ‘taxing the rich’ may sound like a good idea to Democrats…this increased tax would affect thousands of job creators and small business owners…and leave hardworking families with a higher tax burden.”
Tipsword was elected as state representative for Illinois’ 105th House District in 2023 after replacing Dan Brady according to Ballotpedia.
Observers may watch how these legislative measures develop further while district residents continue recovery efforts following recent storms.
