Illinois State Representative Dennis Tipsword Jr. addressed several legislative and community issues in his latest e-newsletter released on March 20. The topics included proposed gun legislation, public safety laws, tax reminders, energy concerns, and updates to federal nutrition assistance.
The newsletter is significant as it highlights current debates in Springfield that could affect residents’ rights and daily lives. It also provides constituents with information about how to participate in the legislative process and stay informed about policy changes.
Tipsword raised concerns about two bills introduced by Democrats: HB 4414, which would impose a five-cent tax per round of ammunition and require serialization of handgun ammunition; and HB 4471, which would ban certain handguns used by law-abiding citizens. He said these measures represent an ongoing effort to restrict Second Amendment rights. “All law-abiding citizens should be appalled simply by the introduction of this legislation. It is clear that the overwhelming goal is to decimate our Second Amendment,” Tipsword said.
He encouraged constituents to file witness slips opposing these bills ahead of committee hearings scheduled for next week. Information on how to do so was provided through links to the Illinois General Assembly’s website.
The newsletter also addressed recent incidents involving Scott’s Law violations after three Illinois State Police vehicles were struck while responding to emergencies. Tipsword reminded drivers that Scott’s Law requires motorists to move over and slow down for emergency vehicles with activated lights or civilian vehicles with hazard lights.
Other topics included a call from the Illinois Department of Revenue for early mailing of tax returns, an invitation from the Illinois State Museum for residents to share family stories ahead of America’s 250th anniversary, criticism of current transit safety measures on Chicago Transit Authority lines, concerns about phasing out natural gas plants amid potential energy shortages, and upcoming changes to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to new federal work requirements taking effect May 1.
Tipsword has represented Illinois’ 105th House District since being elected in 2023, succeeding Dan Brady according to available records.
Looking forward, Tipsword urged continued engagement from district residents on legislative matters and emphasized the importance of staying informed as state policies evolve.
