Illinois State University senior Silvia Pomarolli was named the Missouri Valley Conference Singles Player of the Week on March 11 after leading the Redbirds to two team victories in California, according to a statement from the league office.
The recognition highlights Pomarolli’s recent performances during Illinois State’s spring break trip. On Saturday, she secured the deciding point in a close 4-3 win over Pacific by defeating Rayna Sugai in three sets. The following day, Pomarolli won again at the No. 2 spot with a straight-set victory against Dominican’s Deepalakshmi Vanaraja, contributing to a 7-0 sweep for Illinois State. She has now won eight of her last ten matches and also competes at the No. 1 doubles position with Lana Caculovic.
Pomarolli previously earned weekly conference honors alongside Caculovic as Doubles Team of the Week in January. The Redbirds will conclude their California trip on Thursday with a match against Stanislaus State at the Stan State Tennis Courts.
