Redbird Gymnasts Wrap Up Regular Season Against Ranked Foes
The final regular season meet for the Illinois State gymnastics team is a big one, as the Redbirds travel just down the road to Champaign, Illinois, to take on host and No. 22 ranked Illinois and No. 12 ranked Kentucky in a tri-meet at Huff Hall set to begin at 2 p.m.
"We are looking forward to competing against two strong programs in Illinois and Kentucky," ISU head coach Bob Conkling said. "The team is up for the challenge, and they are ready to put together a solid meet on all four events."
Illinois State heads into the meet as winners of four of its last five, thanks to four scores of 195 plus in that span. Last weekend, the Redbirds rallied to defeat their MIC rival Southeast Missouri State by a score of 195.025-195.000 on the road. The performance featured a team score of 49.200 on vault that ranks third in program history and was highlighted by senior Angelica Labat, who recorded a season-high score of 39.400 to win the all-around competition and earn MIC Gymnast of the Week honors.
Illinois heads into the meet tied for the No. 22 spot in the most recent Road To Nationals rankings and is coming off a new season-high team score of 196.875, which placed them second in a tri meet against No. 16 Ohio State and Kent State last weekend. The Illini and the Redbirds have met already once this season at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, with the Illini edging the Redbirds by a score of 196.300-195.850.
Kentucky is the No. 12 team in the country coming into the meet and is coming off an impressive 197.675-196.450 win over No. 9 Auburn, after losing 197.575-198.150 dual with No. 3 Florida a week before. The win helped Kentucky go undefeated at home for the first time since 1984.
