Senator Chris Balkema (R-Channahon) has announced that the 53rd Senate District will receive more than $1 billion in transportation investments as part of Illinois’ proposed $50.6 billion multi-year construction plan.
“This plan represents a major investment in the communities of the 53rd District,” Senator Balkema said. “Our families, farmers, and small businesses rely on safe, dependable roads every day, and this funding will help improve quality of life while supporting local jobs and economic growth.”
The Fiscal Year 2026-31 Rebuild Illinois Highway Improvement Program allocates funding for 171 state highway projects in the district with an estimated total cost exceeding $900 million. Additionally, 50 local highway projects are set to receive more than $65 million for improvements.
“These dollars mean safer roads for families, less wear and tear on vehicles, and better connections for the businesses and farms that drive our region’s economy,” Sen. Balkema said. “It’s about making sure our communities get their fair share of resources and ensuring the 53rd District continues to thrive.”
The statewide initiative expands upon Rebuild Illinois, a capital program launched in 2019 that remains the largest in state history. The plan will invest billions over six years not only in roads and bridges but also transit systems, rail infrastructure, aviation projects, and pedestrian and bicycle pathways.
Balkema was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2025 as a Republican representing the state's 53rd Senate District. He succeeded Thomas M. Bennett.
