Illinois State University’s soccer team was narrowly defeated by Northwestern, 1-0, in a match held Sunday evening at Adelaide Street Field.
Both teams started the game with strong offensive efforts, each forcing three saves from the opposing goalkeeper within the first 20 minutes. The first half remained scoreless, with Illinois State’s redshirt sophomore Madi Valenti making two crucial saves late in the period to keep the contest tied going into halftime.
Northwestern broke the deadlock early in the second half, scoring in the 49th minute to secure what would become the winning goal. Despite efforts from Illinois State to level the score, they were unable to find an equalizer.
Valenti finished the match with a career-best 10 saves. This performance marks the highest number of saves recorded by a Redbird goalkeeper in a single game since 2023.
Graduate transfer Elyse DeSchryver played 42 minutes against her former team, Northwestern.
