Former McLean County Board Chairman Matthew Sorensen recently reported to prison to serve a 12-month sentence for a wire fraud conviction related to the theft of more than $400,000, according to a report from the Edgar County Watchdogs.
Prior to joining local government, Sorensen worked as an internal consultant at State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co., according to earlier reports from the Watchdogs and BLN News. While with State Farm, Sorensen worked with Navdeep Arora, at the time a consultant at global management firm McKinsey & Co. Inc.’s Chicago office, to defraud their employers, the Department of Justice reported at the time of Sorensen’s indictment.
Sorensen and Arora created two companies used to bill McKinsey for consultancy work that was never performed. Arora added those bills to State Farm projects, and Sorensen collected more than $400,000 from the scheme, the Department of Justice reported.
According to the Watchdogs, Sorensen was convicted in federal court in September and was ordered to pay restitution of $490,975. He was sentenced to serve 12 months and one day in prison and was due to report by 2 p.m. Nov. 27.
