Cost of college went up for all students at Heartland Community College

In-state tuition and fees rose 2.2 percent for 2017-18 at Heartland Community College, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

Illinois residents paid $8,550 to attend the two-year public institution this year $180 more than the $8,370 charged for 2016-17.

Non-residents paid 48.1 percent more than residents this year, or $12,660. Their price tag grew 1.9 percent from $12,420 in 2016-17.

About 98 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Illinois residents. About 1 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 59 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 172 students received grants or scholarships totaling $786,645 and 94 students took out student loans totaling more than $399,915.

Including all undergraduates, 2,058 students used grants or scholarships totaling $7.03 million. Another 943 took out $3.61 million in federal student loans.
