City of Bloomington issued the following announcement on Dec. 4.
Miller Park Zoo has added a male otter named Spencer. Spencer and Tallulah, the mother of this year’s otter pups, have been given a breeding recommendation for the upcoming year. The otter pups will likely be leaving the Zoo this winter.
Miller Park Zoo has had pups four out of the last five years. North American River Otters rarely reproduce in zoos and aquariums, there have only been four litters across 110 institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums this year. A typical litter is three pups but can be anywhere from one to five.
“It is exciting to watch the otters get to know each other.” explained Jay Tetzloff, Miller Park Zoo. “We look forward to Spencer continuing our successful breeding program and helping to maintain a healthy otter population.”
