ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 76: Yednock Introduces Legislation to Honor Fallen Vietnam Soldiers in Marseilles

76

Illinois State House District 76 issued the following announcement on March 3

State Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, is sponsoring legislation to commemorate the lives and sacrifice of two fallen Vietnam soldiers by dedicating sections of highways in Marseilles in their memory.

“For a long time, our veterans and soldiers in Vietnam did not get the respect that they deserve for their service,” said Yednock. “Both of these men represent our military members making the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, and it’s time that we publically acknowledge and remember their lives that were given in service to our country.”

U.S. Army SPEC Norman Eugene Treest and U.S. Air Force SGT Michael J. Vangelisti were both service members lost during the Vietnam War. Treest died of his wounds on August 5, 1967 while serving as a Medical Corpsman with the HHC of the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. Sgt. Vangelisti died in the line of duty near Gia Dinh, South Vietnam on April 28, 1970 while serving with the 17th Special OPS Squadron of the 14th Special OPS Wing, 7th Air Force out of Tan Son Nhut Air Base.

“We are joining together as a community to honor and remember these two brave men,” said Yednock. “We must remember our military members and veterans every day, those that are currently serving and overseas, have served and those that gave their lives to help protect our country and the freedoms that we all have.”

Yednock has sponsored House Joint Resolutions 98 and 99 to honor the lives of Treest and Vangelisti by designating portions of Route 6 in Marseilles in their memory. Both resolutions currently await consideration by a House Committee before moving for full adoption by the Illinois House of Representatives.
