State Rep. Dan Brady (R-Bloomington) criticized Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s combined state and budget address, held this week, calling it unrealistic.
Brady attributes Illinois’ present financial concerns to the governor and the majority party’s “unbalanced budget” presented last year.
“In May 2020, House Democrats supported a widely unbalanced budget to the tune of about $5 billion,” he said. “We're now experiencing the serious financial impact of that irresponsible decision despite warnings from our caucus and on top of COVID.”
In a statement, he said that the majority party pushed a budget which counted on “more than we were expecting to bring in in revenue," and the Democrats "said voters would simply have to approve their progressive tax increase in November to pay for it,” despite the scenario of businesses shutting down and growing unemployment lines due to COVID.
The voters said no to the graduated income tax system.
“We know how that plan worked out, but a year later, here we go again,” he said.
“Now we learn that the Governor is going to reverse course on his agreement with our Republican Caucus which will financially handicap small businesses even more as they struggle to get back on their feet,” the statement continued.
Brady said that the proposed budget is “not the realistic” and a “balanced budget” is desperately needed “to get the economy back on track.”
