A Bloomington resident won one of the three seats on the McLean County School Board. Jeremy DeHaai placed second after getting 18.1 percent of the votes for the Unit 5 School Board.

DeHaai, who won with 5,370 votes, campaigned that students are his only focus. He now has the opportunity to fulfill his promise.

“Thank you so much to the people that have supported me during my candidacy for the Unit 5 School Board and to all of you that voted for me today!” he said on Facebook. “I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to talk with so many students, parents, teachers, administrators, staff, and taxpayers in our community through this process and I am humbled that you have elected me to serve as your new school board member! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

DeHaai is in favor of reopening the brick and mortar classrooms for students, noting that distance learning has been challenging for the children and the parents as well.

He said that the pandemic motivated him to run. He said he would want to address the difficulty some families are having with remote learning.

DeHaai is a sales manager at Kroff Chemical Company.
