State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Champaign) is among the Republican lawmakers expressing outrage that the National Archives is now putting warning labels on founding documents such as the Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence.
“Enough is enough,” Rose tweeted.
“A ‘trigger’ warning on the Constitution,” he posted. “Who the hell do these idiots think they are?"
Rose has plenty of company is blasting the move.
“The National Archives have now put a disclaimer on their website that our historical documents may include Harmful Content,” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) posted on Twitter. “They even slapped this warning on the Constitution!”
The move is viewed as part of the National Archives’ much talked about “institutional commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.”
Archive officials said they are flagging content that is viewed as “potentially harmful,” with staffers defining that as content that is “discriminatory towards or exclude diverse views on sexuality, gender, religion, and more.”
The same treatment is reserved for content viewed as “racist, sexist, ableist, misogynistic/misogynoir, and xenophobic opinions and attitudes.”
This development comes in the wake of a National Archives task force recently concluding that historical documents’ portrayal of the founding fathers was “too positive.”
