State Rep. Dan Brady (R-Bloomington), who is eyeing the Republican nod for the Illinois Secretary of State race in the June primary, late last month expressed his support for a new program designed to support the trucking industry.
According to a press release issued by his campaign, Brady backs the Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program authorized by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
The pilot program seeks to generate more jobs and ease the strain caused by the recent rash of supply chain delays.
“More truck drivers means more goods can be delivered, shortages can be eased, young people can earn a living wage in a lucrative career, and our economy can literally get moving again,” Brady said in the release. “Illinois has the third most total highway miles of any state, and with more truck drivers on our roads we stand to gain more tax revenue while getting our industrial, commercial and personal goods delivered on time again.”
Individuals between the ages of 18 and 20 who carry a Commercial Driver’s License can cross state lines after extensive training through the pilot program and trucking companies will be able to implement apprenticeship programs for drivers under the age of 21, the release said.
Truck drivers in Illinois obtain their licenses from the Illinois Secretary of State.
“We rarely have a chance to do something like this that fires on all cylinders,” Brady said. “I am one hundred percent behind this apprenticeship program.”
The lawmaker announced his candidacy last November through a YouTube video.
“The Illinois Secretary of State's office touches the lives of more Illinoisans and business in any other executive branch office,” Brady said in the video. “I look forward to sharing more in-depth my ideas for new technology and innovative services to reduce wait times for renewal processes while protecting personal data. The Secretary of State's office is an office created to provide service, not develop public policy.”
Brady will face veteran Springfield prosecutor John Milhiser in the primary, the Illinois Times reported.
According to the Center for Illinois Politics, Brady’s campaign war chest had around $250,000 during the last three months of 2021.
Brady has landed the endorsement of several Republican legislators, including House GOP Leader Jim Durkin (R-Burr Ridge).
