City of Fairbury City Council met June 15

City of Fairbury City Council met June 15.

Here are the minutes provided by the council:

1. Call to order – Mayor Slagel called the meeting to order at 6:36 p.m.

2. Mayor Slagel directed the Clerk to call roll and the following members of Council answered present: Gary Norris, Steve Endres, Gerald Hoffman, James Tipton and Bill Schmidgall.

3. Pledge of Allegiance 

4. Motion to approve the Consent Agenda – Motion by Schmidgall, second by Endres to approve the following items on the Consent Agenda:

A. Minutes from the June 1, 2022, council meeting

B. Voucher Invoice Register listing the bills

C. Treasurer’s Cash Report (second meeting of the month)

D. Check Register (second meeting of the month)

E. 508 S 7th St – 208 sq ft @ $2.50 per ft = $520.00

F. Overtime Report

Motion carried 5-0. YES-Norris Endres Hoffman Tipton Schmidgall

5. Mayor Slagel opened Public Comment and the following persons provided comments: 

⮚ Amanda Todd, Director of Dominy Memorial Library, introduced herself and provided a recap of upcoming events such as, 

o Live on the Lawn, a barbershop quartet and ice-cream social on Saturday, July 16th, Noon to 1 p.m. 

o A community survey on the library’s website under the Resources tab 

6. Reports of Departments 

→ Streets & Fire – Martin Steidinger, Superintendent & Fire Chief reported 

• The Fire Department’s suburban was damaged Saturday night at the races after it slid into a push truck; the Fire Department will be looking for a replacement 

• Requested an executive session tonight after open session for Personnel – Section 2 (c)(1) – Employee hiring, firing, compensation, discipline and performance. (Note: an independent contractor is not an employee).

→ Sewer – Brad Duncan, Superintendent was absent

→ Water – Mike Mellott, Superintendent – no report

→ Police – Robert McCormick, Chief – no report

→ City – Brett Ashburn, Superintendent reported

• The fiber optic company, MCS, is ready to begin work in town and is hoping to be finished before winter

→ Legal – Steven Mann, City Attorney was absent

7. Reports of Aldermen 

→ Alderman Norris deferred his comments to Dale Maley who noted he has repaired the murals and split rail fence that were damaged by the semi-truck last November; Alderman Norris provided a report on the pool

→ Alderman Endres – no report

→ Alderman Hoselton was absent

→ Alderman Kinate was absent

→ Alderman Weber was absent

→ Alderman Hoffman – no report

→ Alderman Tipton – no report

→ Alderman Schmidgall – no report

A. Motion by Endres, second by Tipton to approve an Application for Alcohol Sales & Consumption on City Property from Crazy Crains on Saturday, July 23, 2022, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Motion carried 5-0. YES-Norris Endres Hoffman Tipton Schmidgall

B. Motion by Norris, second by Tipton to approve an Application for Alcohol Sales & Consumption on City Property from Crazy Crains on Saturday, September 17, 2022, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Motion carried 5-0. YES-Norris Endres Hoffman Tipton Schmidgall

C. Motion by Schmidgall, second by Hoffman to approve a request to hold a Freedom Fest sponsored by Fairbury Echoes Museum in Marsh Park Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motion carried 5-0. YES-Norris Endres Hoffman Tipton Schmidgall

11. Other Items for Discussion & Information 

A. Minutes of the Zoning Board of Appeals hearing on Monday, May 23, 2022 in consideration of a variance request from Brian and Rebecca Miller – SHARED

13. Motion by Schmidgall, second by Hoffman to enter Executive Session at 6:57 p.m.

Motion by Tipton, second by Norris to enter Open Session at 7:13 p.m.
