Labat Earns MIC Gymnast of the Week Honors
For the second time this season, Illinois State senior gymnast Angelica Labat has been named the Midwest Independent Conference Gymnast of the Week following a strong performance in ISU's tri-meet win over Centenary and Bowling Green.
Also joining Labat with weekly MIC honors are Nya Kraus of Lindenwood (Newcomer of the Week), Brooke Ferrari of Texas Woman's University (Performance of the Week) and Kaylee Cooper of Lindenwood (Coaches Choice). The weekly honor is the 19th for Labat in her illustrious career at Illinois State.
Labat was dominant in the Redbirds victory Centenary and Bowling Green on Friday night. After a slow start on vault, Labat rallied in a big way to win the next three events of the night and capped it off with a career-high score of 9.900 to take home the title on floor. The event wins on bars, beam and floor helped her pick up an all-around title with a score of 39.125. It marked her third-straight all-around win in as many meets and gave her back-to-back 39 point plus performances.
Illinois State will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the highly-competitive Metroplex Challenge against No. 4 Utah and No. 18 Georgia on Saturday. The Redbirds will compete in the afternoon session, before sticking around to watch the evening session that features No. 1 ranked Oklahoma, No. 11 Alabama, No. 16 Arkansas and No. 24 Stanford.
