Desi Anderson, a candidate for House District 91, is addressing the concerns of frustrated homeowners in the 91st District regarding their recent property tax assessments.

“So many folks in the 91st are frustrated with their recent property tax assessment increase. Lots of conversations at the doors about this topic,” Anderson said on Facebook. “Clearly the policies in Springfield passed by our Democrats push our local communities to continuously raise their property taxes whether it’s in our schools, townships or our municipalities. Mandates after mandates passed through unfunded by the state.”

According to The Chicago Tribune, residents in the north and northwest suburbs of Cook County, Illinois are dealing with a substantial property tax hike – the largest in three decades. The median residential tax bill has surged by 15.7%. This rise is attributed to several factors including COVID-19 adjustments, surging property values, and appeals to assessments which have all had an impact on homeowners in this region.

In addition, local property taxing bodies within these northern suburbs have raised levies by approximately 6.6%, thereby adding additional pressure onto already hefty residential property tax bills. Consequently, many homeowners are encountering significant tax hikes leading to widespread frustration and confusion within this community.

Wirepoints reports that Illinois continues wrestling with having the second-highest property taxes nationwide contributing significantly towards lower home prices. Its rate of 2.1% is only exceeded by New Jersey’s rate of 2.2%. As a result, Illinois’ property taxes are more than double those found in Missouri and two-and-a-half times those in Indiana and Kentucky. This leaves Illinois ranking as the least favorable state for home appreciation over a period of two decades; home values increased by merely 13% when adjusted for inflation while other states such as Texas and Florida experienced a surge in home values by an impressive 100%. Other mountain states like Montana and Idaho saw growth rates of up to 117% and 139% respectively.

The 91st House District comprises parts of McLean, Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford counties.
