Rep. Bunting’s Springfield news update for September 6 highlights several community events and state initiatives.
Next Saturday, September 14, Rep. Bunting will host a free shred truck event in Gilman at the Ford-Iroquois Farm Bureau office from 9 a.m. until noon. This drive-up event allows residents to safely shred confidential documents without leaving their cars. Rep. Bunting and his staff will be available to answer questions about state government and provide information on state programs.
In conjunction with Hunger Action Month, the event will also include a collection drive for non-perishable food items to support local food pantries. "Far too many of our neighbors deal with food insecurity," said Rep. Bunting. He recently visited the Eastern Illinois Foodbank, noting that their pantries are currently serving 90% more people than in 2022.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal is accepting applications for funding through the Small Equipment Grant program until October 1. The program offers grants up to $26,000 for small firefighting or ambulance equipment. To assist fire departments with the application process, informational meetings will be held online next week via Webex.
September marks National Preparedness Month, encouraging individuals and communities to prepare for emergencies such as snowstorms, floods, and tornadoes. Recommended steps include knowing emergency locations, having an emergency kit, learning CPR, and storing important documents securely.
Rep. Bunting also provided an update on the state's bill backlog. As of now, Illinois has $2,018,585,676 in unpaid bills submitted to the Comptroller's office for payment.
