The Illinois State track and field team concluded the first day of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City. Junior Jake Welch achieved victory in the men's 600m run, clocking a time of 1:18.48, placing him fourth on the program's top-10 list. Junior Star Mpama also made it onto the top-10 list with a time of 1:32.98 in the women's 600m run.
Mpama and Welch are now the 12th and 13th Redbirds this season to enter the program's top-10 list. Senior Lauren Schulze, from Clive, Iowa, ran a time of 10:01.75 in the women's 3000m event. Schulze returned to Iowa City where her mother Jenny was a distance runner for Iowa.
Freshman Trey Thomas and senior Kiley Sanders earned podium finishes in the high jump, with Thomas clearing 1.95m (6-4.75) and Sanders clearing 1.70m.
Senior Sean Hopkins secured second place in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.08m (23-2.75). On the women's side, senior Atleigh Hamilton recorded her season-best jump at 5.68m.
Sophomore Garrett Taylor finished in the top five of the men's shot put with a throw measuring 16.92m (55-6.25). Sophomore Adison Scott threw a season-best distance of 15.26m in the women's weight throw, finishing ninth.
The Redbirds will continue competing on Saturday to wrap up their participation in the Larry Wieczorek Invitational, starting at 1:00 p.m., beginning with the women's pole vault event.
