Illinois Wesleyan concludes season at NCAA wrestling championships

The Illinois Wesleyan University men's wrestling team wrapped up its season at the NCAA Division III Region VI Championships held on Friday, February 28, at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Eight Titans represented IWU in the event. Sophomore Austin Johnston from Normal, Illinois, achieved his 20th career pin during the first round of the consolation bracket against Elliot Cooney of Cornell at 5:53. Johnston finished with a 1-2 record for the day in the 141-pound category.

In another match, sophomore Jeremy Olson from Tremont, Illinois, competing in the 174-pound class, secured a pin at 2:23 over Joey Alvarado of Schreiner. Meanwhile, sophomore Alex Jackson from Harvey, Illinois, and senior Bobby Conroy from St. Louis picked up wins after initial losses. Jackson pinned Steven Flagg of Huntingdon in under a minute to end with a 1-2 record at 285 pounds. Conroy triumphed with a 13-2 major decision over Thomas Culp of Eureka in the 184-pound weight class.

The event marked the end of wrestling careers for seniors Bobby Conroy, Leonardo Reyes from Manteno, Illinois, and Omar AlQammaz from Orland Park, Illinois.
