A slow start hindered the Illinois State Redbirds in their Missouri Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal game, resulting in a 76-63 defeat against Belmont on Friday afternoon.
Dalton Banks led the Redbirds with a game-high 19 points and contributed seven assists, six rebounds, three steals, and three blocked shots. He is one of only two NCAA players this season to achieve such stats in a single game. Johnny Kinziger added 12 points for Illinois State.
Belmont took control early with a 9-2 lead and maintained it throughout the match. The Bruins extended their first-half advantage to as much as 23 points, leading 41-18 at halftime.
Despite Illinois State's efforts to close the gap with several scoring runs in the second half, they were unable to reduce Belmont's lead to single digits. The Redbirds managed to narrow the deficit to 11 points but ultimately fell short by 13.
Illinois State shot 35.8 percent from the field (24-of-67) and struggled from beyond the arc with just 22.2 percent (8-of-36).
For Belmont, Tyler Lundblade and Carter Whitt each scored 14 points, while Jonathan Pierre, Isaiah Walker, Brody Peebles, and Sam Orme all added 11 points apiece.
