Senator Chris Balkema of Channahon has successfully advanced Senate Joint Resolution 12, a measure aimed at declaring 2026 as the Illinois Route 66 Centennial Year. This resolution was passed in the Senate and now awaits consideration in the House.

Route 66 is renowned for its historical significance and economic impact, particularly within Illinois' 53rd Senate District. The highway's legacy remains prominent in communities such as Pontiac, known for its Route 66 Museum and historic murals. Senator Balkema emphasized this during his address on the Senate floor, stating, "For nearly a century, Route 66 has connected communities, fueled local businesses, and drawn visitors from around the world."

The resolution acknowledges Illinois' pivotal role in the history of Route 66. It was the first state to fully pave the road and serves as its starting point. Balkema expressed pride in leading this initiative to honor Route 66's centennial anniversary: "Pontiac, with its iconic Route 66 Museum, historic murals, and classic roadside attractions, is a shining example of how this highway continues to shape our district."

Route 66 is often referred to as the "Main Street of America" or the "Mother Road." Established in 1926, it remains a symbol of American freedom and exploration. "I’m honored that my first resolution in the Senate is dedicated to celebrating this iconic highway," said Balkema.

With SJR 12 moving forward after passing in the Senate, attention now turns to its progress through the House.
