Illinois State's Van Breedam records top-10 steeplechase time at Bryan Clay Invitational

The Illinois State track and field team completed the first day of the Bryan Clay Invitational at Cougar Athletic Stadium in Azusa, California, on Wednesday evening. Freshman Astrid Van Breedam led the Redbirds' efforts by recording a top-10 time of 10:34.76 in the 3000m steeplechase. Her performance marks her as 10th in Illinois State's history for the event.

The competition continues on Thursday with the team fielding seven athletes throughout the day. Scheduled events include junior Yusuf Baig and graduate student Nick Doud competing in the men's 5000m open B at 9:00 a.m. CST. At 10:05 a.m., junior Maggie Reed will participate in the women's 5000m open B. Sophomores Colleen Zeibert and Grace Erb will compete in the women's 800m invite at 5:50 p.m. Sophomore Kane Shields and freshman Julian Baker will run in the men's 800m invite at 7:30 p.m. The day's events will conclude with senior Zack Loomis competing in the men's 5000m open A at 11:20 p.m.

Following Thursday's events, the Illinois State team will participate in the Michael Johnson Invitational hosted by Baylor on Friday, April 18, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
