State Representative Dennis Tipsword of Metamora has expressed his concerns following the approval of the fiscal year 2026 state budget. In a statement, Rep. Tipsword criticized the newly passed budget, highlighting several issues he believes are problematic.
"The more things change, the more they stay the same in Illinois," said Tipsword. He pointed out that Democrats have approved what he described as "another bloated budget" which includes $1 billion in targeted tax increases. Additionally, he noted that these tax hikes were accompanied by significant pay raises for lawmakers and projects benefiting specific districts.
Rep. Tipsword also addressed other legislative actions taken during the week, mentioning legislation that he feels undermines Second Amendment rights and favors criminals over law enforcement officers, thereby threatening public safety.
According to Tipsword, spending has increased by 38 percent over the past six years, a trend he considers unsustainable. He criticized the process used to pass this year's budget as lacking transparency and being conducted behind closed doors. "The budget and other impactful pieces of legislation were brought forward only hours before adjournment," leaving little opportunity for debate or public input, he stated.
In conclusion, Rep. Tipsword emphasized the need for pro-growth policies and tax reductions to guide Illinois on a better path. He urged a shift in priorities from the majority party to ensure progress for the state.
