Redbird freshman Grace Petrie has been named the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Freshman of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office on October 7. This is Petrie's first career MVC recognition. She joins teammate Rylann Law as one of two Illinois State players to earn this honor during the current season.
Illinois State has now had a player recognized for a weekly award for six consecutive weeks, marking its longest such streak since 2019. Petrie also joins sophomore Kaya Durkee and senior Jade Rehberger as Redbird defenders who have received weekly conference honors this year.
Petrie played all 90 minutes in Sunday's draw, continuing her streak of playing every minute in the last ten games. She leads all Redbird freshmen with 1,191 minutes played this season, which is third most on the team.
Her efforts have contributed to Illinois State's defensive success. The team has recorded eight shutouts so far this season and currently ranks eighth nationally for total shutouts. In their last six matches, the Redbirds have achieved clean sheets in five contests.
