Senator Chris Balkema (R-Channahon) has sponsored Senate Resolution 124, which was approved by the Illinois Senate this week. The resolution honors Illinois farmers for their dedication and ongoing contributions during the harvest season.

“Farmers are the backbone of our state,” said Senator Balkema. “Their hard work and long hours don’t go unnoticed, especially during harvest season. This resolution is one small way to recognize their vital role in keeping our communities strong and ensuring families have food on their tables.”

The Illinois Department of Agriculture reports that agriculture adds over $19 billion to the state’s economy annually and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs. The state has about 75,000 farms covering more than 27 million acres, making agriculture a key part of Illinois’ economy.

“Whether it’s corn, soybeans, livestock, or specialty crops, Illinois farmers continue to lead the way in innovation and stewardship,” Balkema added. “I’m proud to stand with them and celebrate the work they do every day.”

Balkema, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2025 to represent the 53rd Senate District, succeeding Thomas M. Bennett.
