The city of Bloomington announced the upcoming tree-trimming work last week.

Ameren Illinois' certified arborists will be directing the tree trimming on the utility right-of-way and easements.

Notices have been mailed to residents affected by the tree trimming. Ameren also posted public notices in local newspapers.

The Ameren Illinois Vegetation Management department manages the vegetation that affects the utility lines. Trimming trees helps prevent fallen branches and trees from affecting electrical power service during weather events.

Only trees within the right-of-way and easements will be trimmed. If a tree must be removed, the homeowner is usually notified in advance.

When planting in the easement or near power lines, residents should consider the size of the tree or shrub. Avoid planting fast-growing trees under or near the lines, poles and electrical equipment. Small trees and shrubs under 12 feet tall are generally safe under power lines; however, homeowners should call 811 before digging planting holes to ensure that they do not accidentally contact underground utility lines.

The National Arbor Day Foundation has designated Ameren as a "Tree Line USA" utility. The foundation recognizes utility companies that train their tree trimmers on the proper methods of trimming trees as well as providing information to help customers select trees for their landscapes.

Ameren customers can access tree selection and planting information on the Ameren Corporation website
