Bloomington FD responds to 160 fires in 2017

Bloomington Fire Department responded to 783 calls in 2017 - 20.4 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Bloomington included 160 fires - 75 structure fires, 19 vehicle fires and 66 other fires. The fire department also responded to eight calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,041,978 in fire loss - or about $6,512 per fire.

The department also received 615 false calls, including 25 malicious calls and 590 other false calls.

The calls resulted in four civilian fire-related injuries. Additionally, eight fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and 18 were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Bloomington Fire Department had an annual budget of $404,474 in 2017.

The Bloomington Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 108 active employees and 96 retired or inactive employees, was $6,092,571 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $34,815 for every fire in 2016.
