City of Bloomington issued the following announcement on Nov. 9.
The 43rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Luncheon will be held on January 12, 2019 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Normal. The luncheon, hosted by the City of Bloomington Human Relations Commission in partnership with the Town of Normal Human Relations Commission, is one of the oldest programs in the nation that honors the legacy of Dr. King.
Each year an adult and youth community member is awarded the “I Have a Dream Award” in recognition of their volunteer efforts that support the ideology of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Members of the community are invited to nominate individuals for these awards and can do so online by visiting the following website: www.mlkawards.com
One significant update for the 2019 event is the establishment of a new award, where the Bloomington Human Relations Commission identifies an organization that supports the progress towards Dr. King’s dream of equality. This award is known as the “MLK Champion Award.” The inaugural award will be presented to Not In Our Town (Bloomington-Normal).
This year’s keynote speaker is Garry Moore, recently retired WEEK-TV news anchor and community advocate.
