Bloomington City Council members approve property tax, funding for zoo

Bloomington City Council members have approved a property tax rate for the city and library, which won't change from 2019's rates.

With the rate not changing, property owners should also not see a change in their property taxes, the Pantagraph reported.

"The $25,613,169 levy is combined between the city and Bloomington Public Library and is based on the city's total taxable value of properties," Analisa Trofimuk wrote in the Pantagraph. "Officials said the revenue will be generated by an expected increase in equalized assessed value. Ward 2 Ald. Donna Boelen said 12% of the city's revenue comes from property tax."

Council members also agreed to spend funds on additional projects, including $32,000 to fix soil issues and bricks at Miller Park's Zoo and $507,00 for a monkey exhibit, as reported by the Pantagraph.

"The exhibit was approved earlier this year. It is expected to be complete in late spring or early summer next year and will come as the zoo celebrates its 130th anniversary," Trofimuk wrote in the Pantagraph. "The De Brazza's monkey exhibit is part of the zoo's master plan to boost admissions and revenues."
