Looking for Route 66 stories

In two years, the centennial of Route 66 will be marked. The famous highway crosses several communities in our district on its way from Chicago to Los Angeles. To commemorate the occasion, the Illinois State Museum is collecting stories from Illinoisans with ties to the historic highway before its official decommissioning in 1985.

The history staff at the State Museum is asking Illinoisans with Route 66 stories to contact them with their tales of the “Mother Road.” Potential storytellers include those who have memories of driving on Route 66, individuals whose families operated car-related businesses along the route, workers who helped build or maintain the highway over the years, and first responders who worked along the roadway.

Those who volunteer to tell their stories may be interviewed or recorded as part of the project. Stories will be posted online to be shared globally. Illinois aims to be recognized as a significant part of this historic highway's legacy.

Free senior fair coming up in Morris on August 1

I am joining Senators Sue Rezin and Tom Bennett, and Representative Jed Davis to host a free senior health fair in Morris on Thursday, August 1.

The event will take place at Saratoga Elementary School gymnasium, located at 4040 N. Division Street in Morris, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Multiple vendors will provide important information for senior citizens and their caregivers. Health screenings and refreshments will also be available.

Last year’s event had an impressive turnout and provided valuable information. We hope to replicate that success this year. If you are in the area, please stop by.

Safe driving through the tall corn

Although it is after July Fourth, corn is higher than knee-high in most areas within the 106th district.

Even if you don’t have a stop sign… STOP at intersections.

Even if you know there is a stop sign in another direction… STOP at intersections.

Whether walking, riding a bike or ATV, driving a vehicle or farm equipment… STOP at intersections.

Corn blocks visibility at intersections; watching for dust during daylight or headlights at night isn’t sufficient... STOP at intersections.

Never assume drivers from other directions will stop; many accidents occur at blind corners during peak growing season.

Life is precious; being hurried isn’t worth it... always stop at intersections.

Stay safe everyone!

Reminder about our school supply drive

With school approaching soon, this serves as a reminder about our ongoing school supply collection drive. Drop boxes are available at each district office in Watseka and Dwight through August 7. For questions call (779) 218-3070 or email bunting@ilhousegop.org.

Donations will be distributed among schools within the 106th District for student use during the upcoming school year. Thank you to everyone who has already donated items.

Our current bill backlog

When vendors provide goods and services to Illinois state agencies, they submit bills to the Illinois Comptroller for payment processing when funds are available. Currently unpaid bills total $826 million—this figure changes daily—compared with $769 million last year around this time. This amount excludes unfunded debts like pension liabilities exceeding $100 billion.
