The Illinois State men's golf team is facing challenges at the 2024 MVC Championship, currently in ninth place as they enter the final round. The event is being held at The Club at Porto Cima in Sunrise Beach, Missouri.
Leading the Redbirds through 36 holes is Alex McCulla, who is tied for 28th place. His teammates Parker Wisdom and Valentin Peugnet are tied for 30th and 35th places respectively, while Felix van Dijk shares the 35th spot with Peugnet. TJ Barger rounds out the team in 40th place.
Southern Illinois leads after two days with a score of 565, followed by Missouri State with a score of 579. Other teams ahead of Illinois State include Valparaiso (583), Murray State (585), Belmont (588), Drake (597), Bradley (603), and Evansville (604). Northern Iowa trails behind ISU with a score of 610.
On the final day, the Redbirds will begin their rounds starting at 8 a.m., with TJ Barger teeing off from the 10th hole. Following him will be van Dijk at 8:20 a.m., Peugnet at 8:30 a.m., Wisdom at 8:40 a.m., and McCulla concluding their lineup at 9 a.m.
During their recent play, both McCulla and Barger posted scores of 76 to lead their team on that day. Barger's performance included an eagle on the par-five 13th hole—ISU's only eagle so far—and two birdies during his four-over round. McCulla also contributed with two birdies and finished one over par on his first nine holes before adding another birdie on his back nine.
Wisdom managed four birdies along with eight pars to complete his round five over par, scoring a total of 77. Van Dijk recorded one birdie and ten pars for his seven-over-par finish of 79. Peugnet closed out as ISU's fifth golfer for that day with three birdies contributing to his eight-over-par round of 80.
