Several members of the Illinois State women's tennis team received accolades at the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tennis Banquet in Nashville, ahead of the 2024 MVC Tennis Championship. The banquet was hosted by Belmont.
Sophomore Lana Caculovic was named the MVC Newcomer of the Year and also received All-MVC Second Team honors at No. 2 singles. Originally from Dugo Selo, Croatia, Caculovic transferred from North Carolina A&T and made a significant impact in her first season with a 16-6 record this spring, including a 5-3 mark in MVC play. She partnered with Tijana Zlatanovic at No. 1 doubles to achieve a 15-5 overall record this spring and a 6-2 mark in MVC action.
Silvia Pomarolli earned First-Team All-MVC honors and was selected as the league's Scholar Athlete of the Year. Pomarolli maintained an undefeated 8-0 record during conference play in singles at the No. 4 spot for Illinois State, compiling an overall singles record of 18-4 this spring. In doubles play, she teamed up with Nevena Kolarevic to achieve a 15-3 record, including a 6-1 mark in MVC action at No. 2 doubles.
Pomarolli also became the third Redbird to be named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Laura Arciniegas (2021) and Elena Jankulovska (2023). She was part of the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team alongside Zlatanovic and Kolarevic.
Zlatanovic received her third consecutive First-Team All-Academic honor while achieving a 15-7 record at No. 1 singles this spring. Kolarevic, primarily playing at No. 3 singles, had an impressive sophomore year following her Freshman of the Year award in 2023, finishing with a record of 17-4 and a conference record of 6-2.
Illinois State secured the No. 2 seed for the championship starting Friday at Belmont Tennis Complex in Nashville, Tennessee. The team will bypass quarterfinals and face either UIC or Missouri State in Saturday's semifinals.
