Illinois Wesleyan golfer sets new record at NCAA Division III Championship

Junior golfer Griffin Pohl made history for Illinois Wesleyan University at the NCAA Division III Championship, achieving the lowest round in the university's men's golf history. Competing on a par-72, 7377-yard course in Boulder City, Nevada, Pohl carded a six-under 66. This performance broke the previous record of 67 set by Drew Pershing in 2017.

Pohl's round included nine birdies and a notable streak of five consecutive birdies from holes two through six. His efforts contributed to Illinois Wesleyan's eight-under 280 team score, placing them fourth overall after the first day of competition.

Sophomore Michael Spitzer also delivered a strong performance with a four-under 68, tying him for tenth place in his national tournament debut.

The team standings saw Methodist leading with a 17-under par score, followed closely by Emory at 272 and Redlands at 275. Illinois Wesleyan's score of 280 placed them nine shots behind the leaders. Lynchburg completed the top five with a score of 281.

The second round is scheduled for May 15, with live scoring available via Golfstat.
