Junior Michael Spitzer and senior Quinn Clifford led the Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team to victory at the Heartland Invite. The tournament took place on Monday, September 9, at Crestwicke Country Club in Bloomington, Illinois. The team's 'A' squad finished with a score of 581, five-over par, while the 'B' team scored 593, securing second place.
Spitzer was the standout performer among the 73 participants. He was the only player to achieve consecutive rounds below par, starting with a three-under 69 and repeating this score in round two for a total of 138. This placed him five strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. Clifford followed closely with scores of 73 and 70, totaling one-under 143 for second place.
Four members of the Titans shared fourth place with scores of 147 each. Freshman Pablo Castro rebounded from an initial four-over-par round to finish one-under in his second round during his collegiate debut. Juniors Myles Lahart, Juney Bai, and Aidan Healy also earned fourth-place ties.
Senior Griffin Pohl secured a twelfth-place finish with rounds of 77 and 73. Freshman Michael O'Keefe tied for eighteenth position in his first college-level competition after scoring an improved one-over-par in his second round.
The Titans are set to compete next at the Folds of Honor tournament from September 15-17 at Meadows Golf Club in Allendale, Michigan.
