The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team concluded its 2024 season with a loss to Carthage College in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Semifinal. The match, held on May 1 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, ended with a score of 16-11 in favor of Carthage. This result leaves Illinois Wesleyan with a final season record of 9-8, marking their first winning season since 2021.
The game started positively for Illinois Wesleyan when sophomore Devon Hanson caused a turnover that led to the first goal by Anelise DiGiovanni. Despite an early lead and several strong plays by the Titans, including goals from Carleigh Fountain and Mia Fiandaca, Carthage quickly responded and took control by the end of the first quarter with a narrow lead.
Illinois Wesleyan fought back in the second quarter, tying the game at halftime with efforts from Fiandaca who scored multiple goals. However, as the match progressed into the third quarter, Carthage capitalized on their opportunities to regain and extend their lead.
Fiandaca was instrumental throughout the game for Illinois Wesleyan, contributing six goals and four caused turnovers. Britney Maldonado also played a key role with one goal and five assists. Despite these efforts, Carthage maintained their momentum into the fourth quarter to secure their victory.
Goalkeeper Lizzie Rymarcsuk made ten saves during her full-time presence on the field. The match marked the end of collegiate careers for seniors Britney Maldonado and Hanna Trousdale.
