The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team achieved a decisive sweep over Emory University in a doubleheader held on Saturday, March 16, in Atlanta. The Titans won the first game with a score of 15-4 and secured the second victory at 10-3.
In the opening game, freshman Hailey Milgazo initiated the offense with a leadoff single. Contributions from various players helped build an early lead for Illinois Wesleyan. Freshman JD Dowling capitalized on a bases-loaded situation to drive in two runs, setting the tone for the match.
Emory responded by narrowing the gap to 2-1 after the first inning. However, Illinois Wesleyan extended their lead through consistent scoring across subsequent innings. Sophomore Gianna Certa played a crucial role on defense, maintaining control of Emory's attempts to catch up.
Milgazo was instrumental in securing four hits and scoring three times during this game. Freshman Elyssa Stenger also made significant contributions with four RBIs from her three hits. Certa completed the game with four strikeouts and allowed seven hits, earning her third win of the season.
In the second game, Illinois Wesleyan continued their offensive momentum by quickly establishing a 4-0 lead. Beckman drove in Milgazo with a triple, followed by Kuhn and Wissmiller contributing to further extend their advantage.
Emory managed to score intermittently throughout the match but was unable to close the gap significantly against Illinois Wesleyan's steady performance. Caroline Gatchell pitched effectively for IWU, securing her second win of the season despite allowing ten hits.
Both games highlighted strong performances from multiple players on Illinois Wesleyan's roster. The team now looks forward to their home opener against Monmouth College scheduled for Thursday, March 21 at Inspiration Field.
