Three athletes from the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team have been recognized for their academic achievements. Seniors Bailey Turner and Megan Fontanetta, along with junior Jen Kuhn, were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team on May 28. Turner and Kuhn will advance to the Academic All-America ballot.
This marks the first time Fontanetta has received this honor, while Turner and Kuhn have been recognized for two consecutive seasons.
Eligibility for this award requires student-athletes to be at least sophomores academically, maintain a grade point average of 3.50 or higher, and participate in 90 percent or start in 67 percent of their team's competitions.
Turner was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's Defensive Player of the Year after an impressive season. She achieved a .402 batting average with a .598 slugging percentage and a .463 on-base percentage. Turner also earned First Team All-CCIW honors at second base and was nominated for a Gold Glove. She completed her chemistry degree with a GPA of 3.61.
Fontanetta played every game throughout her college career, starting all 43 games in her senior year. She accumulated 22 hits, including two doubles and one home run, while driving in 11 runs and scoring 17 times. Fontanetta graduated with a degree in design, technology, and entrepreneurship with a GPA of 3.64.
Kuhn finished second on her team with a .434 batting average as the starting shortstop. She led her team with a .683 slugging percentage and had an on-base percentage of .494 due to drawing 17 walks. Kuhn is majoring in graphic design with a GPA of 3.98.
Turner and Kuhn will now compete for Academic All-America honors which will be announced by CSC on June 18.
