Illinois State University's volleyball team faced a challenging match against Valparaiso, resulting in a four-set loss on Saturday night at the Athletics Recreation Center. This outcome leaves the Redbirds with an 11-13 overall record and 6-5 in Missouri Valley Conference play. Meanwhile, Valparaiso improved to 14-9 overall and also holds a 6-5 conference record after securing victories in both matches over the weekend.
The match unfolded with Illinois State initially taking set one with a score of 25-20, following two significant runs that helped establish their lead. However, Valparaiso rebounded in set two, pulling ahead with a decisive 25-18 victory after overcoming an early tie.
In set three, Valparaiso maintained momentum by starting strong and eventually sealing it with a 25-16 win despite Illinois State's attempts to close the gap. The final set saw both teams trading points closely until Valparaiso executed a late surge to clinch the match with a 25-22 victory.
Key performers for Illinois State included Khenedi Guest leading in kills with 14, Sammi Bunch contributing 17 digs, and Mekaila Aupiu providing 37 assists. Aupiu also recorded her eleventh double-double of the year.
The Redbirds were outhit by Valparaiso .213 to .156 during the match. Looking ahead, Illinois State will continue their road games against Evansville and Indiana State next weekend.
