Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team secured a decisive victory over Rockford University on Tuesday night, Jan. 21. This win propels IWU to a 4-0 record for the season, marking the best start in the program's five-year history. The Titans wrapped up their victory in just 75 minutes with set scores of 25-14, 25-18, and 25-18.

IWU showcased a well-rounded performance, leading in various statistical categories including kills (30) on a .182 attack percentage compared to Rockford's 17 kills and negative -.018 clip. The Titans also surpassed their opponents in digs (33-27), assists (27-16), and aces (12-5), though Rockford held a slight edge in blocks at 6-5.

Freshman Gavin Rohlwing led ten Titans who recorded kills with six on an impressive .750 attack percentage without errors on eight swings. Sophomore Bryce Williams followed with five kills, while senior Ryan Myers added four. Both Rohlwing and sophomore Brenden Reutter each achieved career-highs with four aces, while freshman Cael Whitchurch recorded two personal-best aces.

Senior Vince DiCosola contributed a match-high of 12 assists, supported by nine from Reutter and three from Whitchurch. Defensively, junior Jace Milka led with seven digs, closely followed by Myers with six and Williams with five. At the net, Rohlwing led with three blocks while Williams, Reutter, and freshman Lane Sunley each recorded one block.

The opening set remained competitive until midway when Myers capitalized on an assist from DiCosola to spark an 8-1 run that put IWU ahead at 13-12. Despite a sideout from RU after a diving dig by Williams resulted in a quick kill by Reutter pushing the lead to two points.

Illinois Wesleyan maintained control as another service error by Rockford allowed Myers to serve an ace following an RU miscue. Rohlwing then delivered a solo block giving IWU an advantage at 18-13 before forcing Rockford into a timeout.

After resuming play, Whitchurch connected with Rohlwing for another kill preceding six consecutive points claimed by IWU post another RU service error. This stretch included three aces from Rohlwing within five points alongside contributions from Sunley’s solo block and Whitchurch’s kill securing them the first set win at 25-14.
