Illinois State University has appointed Dr. Jeri Beggs as the new Director of Athletics, marking a significant milestone as she becomes the first female to hold this position in the NCAA Division I era at the university. This announcement was made by ISU President Dr. Aondover Tarhule following a national search initiated in November 2024.

Dr. Beggs has been serving as Interim Director since May 1, 2023, and her appointment comes after demonstrating strong leadership during her interim tenure. "Dr. Beggs has demonstrated dynamic and visionary leadership in the interim role and the search committee recognized her deep commitment to the student-athlete experience," stated Tarhule.

Beggs' career at Illinois State University is marked by substantial contributions to both the university and broader athletic communities, including roles within the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Her efforts have led to significant fundraising achievements, including a 30 percent growth in the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund since 2023.

Expressing gratitude for her appointment, Beggs said, "I would like to thank President Tarhule for giving me an opportunity in the spring of 2023 and for his recommitted trust in my ability to lead Redbird Athletics today."

Under her leadership, ISU's athletics department saw record academic achievements with departmental GPAs reaching historic highs. She also spearheaded various community initiatives and facility enhancements that have positively impacted student-athletes' experiences.

Dr. Sheahon Zenger praised Beggs' selection: "Seventeen years ago, I helped select Jeri Beggs as the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative for Illinois State University... I believe ISU has found the right leader at the right time."
